QUIET FIRE YOUTH TRACK CLUB, THE EARLY YEARS

IT STARTED WITH A SPARK...

In 1989, Michael Moore, James Dear, and Robert King united behind the singular mission of ensuring kids from underestimated populations found community through education and athletics.

Moore, a Technical Sergeant in the US Air Force, brought an extensive training in track and field both in Germany and in the States. Dear, a Postal Inspection Manager rich in community involvement, was also a coach in the LA area with a storied history. And King, a Configurations Manager with Hughes Aircraft, was himself a former athlete who was coached by and competed for two-time Olympic Gold medalist Lee Calhoun at Grambling State University.

Realizing the vast amount of track and field knowledge between them and driven by their desire to be positive male role models, the three founded Quiet Fire Youth Track Club. With “To be your best, you must give your best,” as the keystone philosophy, the three coaches set out to not only train the youth in their communities, but to enhance the characters of their young charges through self-knowledge, self-respect, dignity, motivation, and a disciplined attitude.

THAT GREW INTO A FLICKER...

A parent association was quickly established and remains the backbone of the club. They help keep the club’s goals in focus, provide support to the coaches and athletes, and are responsible for the fundraising necessary to send club members throughout the US to compete at the highest levels possible against the best athletes in the country.

But the high jump wasn’t the only bar set high. Beyond the athletics, Quiet Fire focused on ensuring its student-athletes truly understood that competition on the filed came second to competing in the classroom. The Quiet Fire Honors Corp was also organized, with the requirement for inclusion being a 3.0 cumulative GPA. In the club’s inaugural year, over 60% of the team was inducted into the Honors Corp.

Over three decades later, our flame still burns bright...

Since its inception, Quiet Fire Youth Track Club has competed at numerous track and field events at the local, regional, state, and national level. Roughly 50% of the team qualifies annually to compete at the national level, with over 90% of those athletes bringing home at least one medal. Further, 80% of our athletic students go on to compete at the collegiate level – most of which do so on scholarships for their stellar academics. And still a lucky few have become pros at the sport, competing at the World and Olympic level as well.

But no matter how far they take track and field, we are proud of all the athletes that have worn the QF red and gold. We continue to strive to ignite a positive spark in every child that laces up to run, jump, or throw in the QF red and gold, and to provide a safe and fun community for the children and their guardians.

While the original three coaches are no longer directly active with the club, they’ve passed the torch to the next generation of coaches, some of which are former Quiet Fire athletes themselves. The mission remains the same: to ensure youth find community through academics and athletics. And it will continue because this fire can’t be stopped.

Coach Robert King remains at the head of Quiet Fire, Inc, a 501(c)3 that focuses on providing infrastructure for its affiliated teams, such as event management services and sponsorship. He continues to give back as the head Track coach at Saint Mary’s Academy in Inglewood, CA, professional track and field athletes, and the elite master’s team, Golden Fire.
